A fundamental principle of WASZP’s new Opti-facing initiative is continuity. The system respects the valuable support network built around successful coaching and strong team environments. The initiative allows Opti coaches to continue supporting the same young athletes with consistency and purpose as they move into WASZP racing.

Just as importantly, that pathway does not stop at the first foiling season. It is deliberately being built to connect youth racing, high school competition, college sailing support, and international racing under a single, coherent framework.

“This is about continuity,” said Agustín Ferrario. “We’re not asking programs to hand sailors off at fourteen and hope for the best. We’re giving them a way to keep coaching those sailors through high school, into college, and even onto the international stage if that’s where the athlete wants to go.”

Solving the Transition — and Extending It

For elite Opti programs, the transition out of the class has always been a pressure point. Sailors age out, families want structure, and programs often struggle to offer a next step that feels equally important.

“What we’ve learned is that sailors don’t leave because they lose interest,” said Tyler Bjorn. “They leave when the next step isn’t clearly defined. WASZP provides that definition. It’s not just about learning to foil. It creates a visible pathway into high school championships, college sailing, and international competition.”

By keeping WASZP embedded within existing Opti programs, the Class is enabling teams to retain athletes through the years when school-based sailing becomes increasingly important.

High School Racing: A Real Competitive Outlet

One of the most immediate extensions of the WASZP pathway is into national high school competition. As more schools look to add high-performance sailing alongside traditional formats, WASZP offers a fleet-racing platform that feels familiar to Opti sailors while raising the technical and athletic bar.

For Opti programs, this creates a powerful incentive to retain sailors locally. Athletes can train year-round with their existing coaches and teammates, then represent their schools in meaningful championships without switching coaches or programs.

“High school sailing is a huge retention lever,” Ferrario noted. “If sailors can stay in the same program, with the same coaches, and still race for their school at a national level, that’s incredibly compelling for families.”

College Sailing Support, Not a Detour

The pathway is also being shaped with college sailing in mind. WASZP is not positioned as an alternative to collegiate sailing, but as a complementary platform that supports athlete development during the critical high school–to–college years.

Sailors entering college can remain active in WASZP through Class-supported teams, training blocks, and regional fleets, maintaining high-performance racing alongside their academic commitments. For coaches recruiting future collegiate sailors, WASZP results offer clear, legible performance data across regions and seasons.

“The skills college coaches care about—starts, tactics, fleet awareness—are front and center in WASZP racing,” Bjorn said. “That makes it a meaningful development tool, not a distraction.”

International Racing, With Class-Level Support

At the top end of the pathway, WASZP connects directly into international competition  through Class-supported teams and events. Sailors who progress through Opti programs and into WASZP are not stepping into an isolated domestic scene; they are entering a globally aligned class with clear routes to international racing.

Through Class coordination and performance partnerships, sailors and coaches can plug into overseas events, training blocks, and world-level competition without abandoning their home programs. That international visibility is particularly important for athletes balancing school commitments while aspiring to compete at the highest levels.

“This is where the long-term thinking really matters,” said Nicholas Draper. “A sailor might start WASZP at fourteen, race through high school, stay involved during college, and still be competitive internationally years later—all within the same class.”

Coaches Stay Central at Every Level

Throughout the pathway—from post-Opti transition, to high school championships, to college support, to international racing—the Class has been explicit about one thing: coaches remain central.

WASZP coaching education is designed to build on existing Opti expertise, focusing on safely integrating foiling while preserving race-team fundamentals. Programs are encouraged to grow WASZP internally, keeping trusted coaches with their athletes as goals evolve.

“Good coaching relationships take years to build,” Ferrario said. “This pathway respects that. It keeps people together instead of resetting everything every few seasons.”

A Path That Grows With the Athlete

By tying Opti programs directly into high school racing, college sailing support, and international competition, the WASZP initiative offers something rare in youth sailing: a pathway that grows with the athlete, rather than forcing constant reinvention.

For elite Opti teams, the message is clear. The next step does not have to mean handing sailors off or starting over. With WASZP, it can mean staying together longer, racing harder, and aiming higher—all within a single, connected framework.

Next Steps: How Opti Race Teams Get Started

To turn this pathway from concept into reality, the Class has put concrete support in place to help Opti Race Teams launch WASZP activity without unnecessary risk or disruption. The focus is on lowering barriers, supporting coaches, and letting programs grow at their own pace.

Subsidized Charter Fleets
Opti Race Teams can access Class-supported, subsidized WASZP charter boats, allowing programs to introduce foiling without committing to permanent inventory. Charter fleets make it possible to pilot WASZP training blocks, clinics, or team programs using real race-ready boats, while keeping costs predictable for both programs and families.

“Our goal is to make it easy to try this the right way,” said Nicholas Draper. “Charter fleets let programs get sailors on the water quickly, see how WASZP fits their culture, and build demand organically before making long-term decisions.”

Coach Training and Certification
The Class is prioritizing Opti coach continuity through targeted WASZP coaching education. Existing Opti coaches are invited into orientation and certification pathways designed specifically to translate race-team coaching skills into a foiling environment. The emphasis remains on fleet racing, safety, and athlete development—not on reinventing coaching philosophy.

“This is about empowering the coaches programs already trust,” said Agustín Ferrario. “We’re adding tools, not replacing expertise.”

Program Development Support Through USFoil
Beyond boats and coaching, Opti teams can tap into broader program development support through USFoil. USFoil is designed to help clubs and teams structure sustainable foiling programs, connect into regional and national networks, and align local activity with high school, college, and international competition opportunities.
