DISCOVER THE WASZP - THE FUTURE OF DINGHY FLEET RACING HAS ARRIVED
Imagine the moment your hull lifts free from the water—the silence, the speed, the sensation of flying. That’s the WASZP. Fast, accessible, and built for all ages, the WASZP has quickly become the world’s most exciting one-design foiling dinghy.
Whether you’re a youth sailor looking for your next step, a college sailor wanting to take your racing to new heights, or a parent returning to the water with your kids, the WASZP offers the perfect pathway into foiling.
The Natural Successor to the ILCA
The ILCA (Laser) has long been the entry point for performance dinghy sailors. But for those looking for the next challenge, the WASZP provides the perfect evolution. It’s a strict one-design class, simple to rig, durable enough for travel, and versatile across sailor weight ranges thanks to multiple rig options. Where the ILCA hones racing fundamentals, the WASZP adds a whole new dimension—speed, control, and the unmatched thrill of close quarters foiling and fleet racing.
As North American Class Manager Tyler Bjorn puts it:
“The WASZP has done for foiling what the ILCA did for dinghy sailing. It’s opened the door to a whole generation of sailors, making the leap to flying not just possible, but accessible and fun.”
Why Choose a WASZP?
The WASZP is not just fun—it’s smart. Here’s why more sailors than ever are making the leap:
Affordable and Accessible Foiling
- Lower Cost: The WASZP is significantly cheaper than other foiling dinghies, making flying achievable for everyday sailors.
- Learning Platform: Forgiving design allows moderate dinghy sailors to foil within their first session.
- Simpler Rigging: A free-standing rig, wishbone boom, and retractable foils make rigging, launching, and landing straightforward.
Safety and Durability
- Safety-Focused Design: Rounded foil edges, a high boom, and no side stays minimize crash risks.
- Robust Construction: A tough epoxy, glass, and carbon-infused hull is built for both learning and racing.
One-Design Racing and Class Culture
- Fair Racing: Strict one-design rules keep the focus on sailing skill, not expensive upgrades.
- Global Community: With fleets in 40+ countries, the WASZP offers a welcoming culture and international racing opportunities.
-
Pathway for All Ages: Starting at age 10 with the WASZPX rig, the WASZP grows with you, keeping young sailors in the sport and adults coming back.
Pathways to Get Foiling
Getting started with the WASZP is easier than you might think. There are multiple entry points depending on your sailing background, budget, and goals:
1. Buy a New or Used Boat
Purchase your own WASZP—new or used—and we’ll help you every step of the way. We can deliver your boat to a clinic or regatta, coach you through setup, and get you foiling right away. If you prefer, we can also send an expert directly to your home venue for one-on-one support. (See boats for sale)
2. Join a Clinic
Our affordable clinics are the perfect way to experience foiling for the first time. You’ll get professional coaching, a supportive environment, and access to a shared charter boat for the weekend. By the end, you’ll understand exactly why sailors around the world are hooked on the WASZP. (See upcoming clinics)
3. Become Part of a Race Team
The WASZP community is built around teams and shared experiences. From U14 and U21 youth groups to our growing Masters program, joining a race team gives you the chance to train, travel, and compete alongside like-minded sailors while building lifelong friendships. (Learn more about the Race Teams)
3. Invite us to come and visit your Club or Team
We have great partners like WeCANFoil and others that will being charters and coaches to your location and provide lessons and coaching to groups both large and small to get sailors and coaches trained up to start hosting local regattas and competitions. (Learn more about opportunities for us to come to your site)
Zaak Beekman, US Class President, highlights the power of these programs:
“What makes the WASZP special isn’t just the boat—it’s the community. With teams and clinics, sailors can jump in at any level, find friends to travel with, and chart their own pathway in this amazing class.”
Fleet Growth Across North America
2025 showed just how far the WASZP has come. Regattas across the continent saw 30+ boats on the starting line, proving the strength of the class and delivering the kind of big-fleet action sailors crave. From the Pacific Coast Championships to the North American circuit, and even international travel to Weymouth for the International WASZP Games, sailors are proving that North America is a foiling force.
The 2025 Games in Weymouth attracted over 250 boats from around the world, one of the largest one-design foiling events in history. And now, the spotlight shifts to the United States: Pensacola, Florida will host the 2026 International WASZP Games in March. Leading up to the Games, a full schedule of training camps and ramp-up regattas will prepare sailors for what promises to be the biggest foiling event ever held in North America.
The year also marked milestones like the launch of the official Winter Base in Jensen Beach and the announcement of High School and College National Championships beginning in 2026. These programs cement the WASZP as the platform keeping young people in sailing while welcoming adults into the sport’s fastest-growing foiling fleet.
Looking Ahead: World Sailing Recognition
As the class continues to expand globally, we expect the WASZP to join World Sailing in 2026. While not yet official, this step will connect our sailors with the wider international sailing community and further solidify the WASZP as the leading one-design foiling class.
World Sailing recognition will open the door to hosting official world championships, registering sailors with World Sailing IDs for elite competition, and bringing World Sailing Race Officer support to major events. More importantly, it will give WASZP sailors a seat at the global table, helping foiling continue its rise as the future of sailing.
